Always on My Mind 1982 written by Johnny Christopher,

A Quiet Gentle Place

There is a quiet, gentle place
that lays within her mind,
reality of time and space
where most she seeks she finds.

It's not a place of future dreams
of hopes or fears or needs,
of dragons breathing fiery streams
or Knights on charging steeds.

It's painted of the memories
she treasures in her heart
of all the care they used to be
before she plied her art.

The laughter there is warming sun,
the smiles a gentle breeze,
eyes reflect a love begun
and arms a place of ease.

He walks not there with her she knows,
he never takes her hand,
and dimmer is the evening glow;
too late she understands.

He cared for her with gentleness,
he answered all her need
but she so feared her emptiness,
so blind she couldn't see.

Yet all she really had to give
was what she felt for him
a warmth of love in which to live
when life was painted dim.

All she searched for far and wide
was what he let her see,
his wish to have her by his side
in gentle company.

But in her fear that he would leave
she lost reality,
and gave up all to vainly cleave
to empty fantasy.

Unbidden tears come to her eyes
an aching in her throat,
she made the bed on which she lies
in fantasies she wrote.

Too late she softly touches him
and gently takes his hand
and gives him what she should have then
a love without demand.
