NOWHERE TO HIDE
The mirror of her soul won't let her run away,
a need she cannot change will always hold her prey.
She's finally realized that she will never win,
no matter where she seeks no refuge from the pain,
he'll never take the step that shelters her in him,
and yet she begged his love, hides from self-disdain.
He says he knows she strong, can stand upon her own,
he cannot understand an empty life, alone,
a spirit filled with love that he will not accept,
a need she didn't choose and which she can't control,
a bond she cannot break for all the tears she's wept,
a dream she knows won't come, deep within her soul.
So in a dim lit room she fin'ly ends her dreams,
the hope within her heart an empty blackened screen,
her hands hold printed sheets of loving words they wrote,
blurred by held back tears she'll not again let fall,
her voice a sound denied by lump within her throat,
not strength but fear of hurt, a name she now won't call.
The shade she raises slow to gaze upon the stars,
and wonders in the night where all their dreams now are.
On table at her side, lay unworn negligees
bought in fool's own dreams by woman that he bade,
on each a yearning touch then gently packed away
with all the memories that never seem to fade.
The picture that he sent, upon his cheek a tear,
drop of love that fell from eyes that can't see clear,
and all the care she felt written in her rhymes
she places with the rest in box that holds her self,
a year of finding soul, eternity of time,
finally locked away on a shadowed closet shelf.
She tries again to find that place she had inside
to put herself away with walls where she can hide,
and finally she sees her fate upon the stars,
stamped in sands of time and all the skies above,
the passion of a two, a wish of what two are,
a longing whispered dream, a life without shared love.©
